There is a legend, mostly tell in Huanuco and Ancash, translated by Jose Maria Arguedas—one of the most well-known Peruvian writers—that tells the story of Lucuma. It is said that in Ancash, Peru, used to live a beautiful princess called Lugma or Lucuma that was opposed to marriage and she treated men with regard. One day, the father of agriculture, Huatio, disguised himself as a bird and flew to the tree branches where Lucuma was resting. Huatio, took a fruit from the tree and give it all of his mystic energy to it. Fascinated by the fruit, the princess decided to eat it. Without realizing it, she ended up pregnant and chose to wait for the child to born, so she can discover who the father was. Time passed, and she called all men of the town to ask them who was the father of her child, but she didn't get any answer. Suddenly, Huatio, who always dressed in ragged and dirty clothes, said, “I’m the father of your child!” Embarrassed and humiliated, Lucuma fled to the mountains. When her tears wet her delicate skin, the color of her tears was black as the Lucuma seed. Lucuma (Lucuma Obovata) is native to Peru. This fruit is sweet and contains niacin, carotene, iron, and fiber. These properties are essential substances for proper body functioning.
